Japan Stocks Drop 5%, Land in Bear Territory
The yen, considered a haven asset in times of economic uncertainty, rose to a four-month high.

TOKYO—Japan’s Nikkei Stock Average fell about 5% and entered a bear market Tuesday on concerns about the U.S. government shutdown, the Federal Reserve’s outlook and a possible global economic slowdown.
The Japanese yen, considered a haven in times of economic uncertainty, rose to a four-month high of \110.00 to the dollar, compared with \110.43 late Monday in New York.
